Above: Woodville Road looking south. To the right is "The Maples", originally a private residence that was converted to Shoreham's 2nd hotel by Frances Upham Warden, whose husband, James Warden, had begun the development of Wardenclyffe, later called "Shoreham." (see also photo below)

Above: Later photo looking north and west from Woodville Road shows the Maples in the 1930's under its new name, the "Dove and Turtle". Famous children's writer and illustrator, Ludwig Bemelmans, author of the "Madeline" series, served as the hotel's bar keeper in the late 1930's. The hotel later became a private residence.
