Rolling Thru the Village on a Sunny Afternoon. 1968: Young Shoreham belles Susie Hapgood and Ann Johnson press an empty Ma Bell spool into use, perhaps to roll down to the beach. Spotters are "Bonkin" (Marjorie) Johnson and attack dog Freckles. Photo is looking south on Wardencliff Road. 60 years before this photo, Susie’s great-great-grandfather, Charles Tagliabue, had financed the construction of Shoreham Village by her great-grandfather, Herbert J. Hapgood. Photo shows an example of Shoreham’s distinctive original 1914 black tar on white concrete roads, which were asphalted over in 1970 over the objections of sentimental Shorehamites. Photo courtesy Ann Johnson Howard.
